First Essay
Instruction: Write a single, integrated essay that deals with the issues raised in one, and only
one, of the following three topics. There is no one "right" answer to the questions posed. It is
important to support your arguments with evidence from the texts (i.e. with authors and page
numbers cited in parentheses within your paper); but do not use long quotations. You should
draw from two thinkers primarily. Please choose two thinkers covered in two different lectures,
i.e. not two liberals or two conservatives or two Greeks. I am asking you to do your own thinking
on the basis of the readings for class. You do not need to consult secondary sources to support
your argument. Essays should be 3-4 pages, typed, double-space. Essay due in class on Monday
June 26, 2000.
1) Compare two ideologies on the basis of their four functions (Ball and Dagger), and their
respective views of freedom and human nature. Which one is the most persuasive and
why? To support your argument, draw from two thinkers primarily, one for each ideology.
i.e. Burke and Marx. Or Locke and Marx. Or Locke and Burke.
2) What is just government?
Draw from two thinkers. i.e. Machiavelli and Pericles. Or Locke and Machiavelli. Or Marx
and Pericles, etc. Describe their understanding of a good government. Where they might
agree and where they differ and why. Again, indicate which one of the two thinkers is most
persuasive to you and why.
3) Creating a better society has been the purpose of many political thinkers and actors. But
is it really possible? Berlin writes that "final harmony" as a goal for politics is dangerous
because "too many eggs are broken while the omelet remains invisible." Marx argues on
the contrary that eventually "we shall have an association, in which the free development of
each is the condition for the free development of all." Compare and contrast Marx and
Berlin's positions and state where you stand in this debate.
